In the spring of 2025, we completed an installation for the University of Žilina, which approached us through the architectural studio DO:JA based on references from the GRAO café project in Bratislava. The project was led by Anna Veselá with the aim of creating an unconventional lighting element that would fit aesthetically into the faculty's common room and hallway.
The challenge: combining aesthetics and technology
The architects wanted to create a striking visual element in the faculty's colors, namely an orange light "snake" that would look impressive even when not lit. The challenge was to connect the individual segments so that they formed a single continuous whole, while also ensuring that they hung evenly without unwanted sagging.
Solution with Spectoda
The goal was to meet the architects' requirement for a lighting element that would be impressive even when switched off. We therefore chose an orange LED strip in a silicone tube with colored silicone, thanks to which the installation retains its color even when switched off.
The implementation included hanging the strips in the space and connecting them to the control system. We used SC Industry controllers and an LED strip dimmer, which allows for smooth brightness control.
The lights are easily controlled via the Spectoda App. Users can turn the lights on and off or adjust the lighting intensity without the need for technical knowledge.
Result
The installation created a striking design element that gave the space new energy and identity. Both the architects and the university appreciated its ease of use and the resulting visual effect.
For future installations, we would recommend using the RGB variant for the possibility of color changes according to the client's current needs and events, in order to increase flexibility of use even further.
